POLITICAL
Power Sharing:
is between the Executive, Legislative and Judicial Armsof Government.
Executive Arm:
Comprises the President and Commander-in-chief of the ArmedForces;
Incumbent President: President Olusegun OBASANJO (since
29 May 1999);President is both the chief executive of state and head
of government.The President is elected by popular vote for no more than
two four-year terms.
Vice-President: Elected with the President –
(supports and acts in the absenceof the President).
Last Election: 19 April 2003 (next election to be held
in 2007).
General Election: Held once every four years for the
offices of the President, Vice-President, both Houses of the National
and States Assembly members.
Federal Cabinet: Federal Executive Council –
Comprises the Ministers appointed by the President and confirmed by
the Senate.
Legislative Arm: A bicameral National Assembly comprising:
Senate (109 members) - elected 3 from each state & one to represent
the FCT, Abuja, and the House of Representatives, omprising 346 members
(elected on state population). Members are elected by popular vote to
serve four-year terms each in both houses, subject to subsequent re-elections.
Judicial Arm: Supreme Court - Judges are appointed
by the President and confirmed by the Senate Federal Court of Appeal
Judges are appointed by the Federal Government on the advice of the
Advisory Judicial Committee.
Legal System: based on the English common law, Islamic Shariah
law (in the northern states), and traditional law throughout the country.
Political Parties: 30 Major among them are: Alliance
for Democracy (AD); All Nigeria Peoples' Party (ANPP); All Progressives
Grand Alliance (APGA); National Democratic Party (NDP); Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP); Peoples Salvation Party (PSP); United Nigeria Peoples Party
(UNPP), etc.
Current Ruling Party at the Federal Level; Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP);
